The PBS documentary Tales of Masked Men premiered in Orange County on Sep. 16, at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, in Downtown Santa Ana, as part of the 2012 OC Film Fiesta.
The documentary’s directorm Carlos Avila, was a special guest at the premiere, which was attended by Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido. Avila previously directed the acclaimed Foto-Novelas.
Tales of Masked Men explores the fascinating, mysterious world of lucha libre and its role in Latino communities in the United States, Mexico and Latin America. Famous for its masked wrestlers and called by one aficionado “a sport in the key of melodrama,” lucha libre is part circus, part athletic contest, part theater. The sport inspires passionate loyalty while contributing a lasting cultural idiom to America’s pop culture landscape.
